Just over a year ago, The Note launched the first issue of the youth magazine Teen Spirit – a publication aimed at getting South Aussie teens off their screens and engaged with the local music scene.
With the social media ban firmly in place, teens across the state devoured Teen Spirit with gusto. They were captivated by the fun and engrossing content exploring the local SA music scene. The response was so overwhelming that we’ve decided to take the mag national!
Thanks to the support of the Australian Government through Music Australia and Creative Australia, its arts funding and advisory body, over 50,000 copies of Teen Spirit will be delivered to schools and youth arts hubs in every state and territory over the coming weeks.
Each issue features locally tailored content highlighting emerging artists from each region – written by locals who know their scene inside and out.
“Teen Spirit aims to not only spark greater interest in the local scene but also drive live music attendance and inspire career pathways,” says The Note’s director, Olly Raggatt.
Encouraging Australian teenagers to ditch the screen and pick up a ‘zine, the debut edition of Teen Spirit features pop artist Ruel as our cover star, an artist who broke onto the international stage at just 14. Inside: exclusive interviews with Heartbreak High's Ayesha Madon, indie rockers Lime Cordiale, First Nations teen rapper Inkabee, and emerging heavy act Maple's Pet Dinosaur, plus career pathway features, a nationwide all-ages gig guide, quizzes, horoscopes, interactive zine content, and glossy pull-out posters.
Teen Spirit gives the youth of today a tangible alternative to the online algorithm that can be tucked into their backpack and read with friends at home. It offers young music fans the opportunity to keep their finger on the pulse without spending hours doomscrolling or listening to AI generate playlists.
This is a magazine for teens, by teens, with aspiring writers and accomplished freelance journalists behind the engaging content.
