SA music legends The Angels have been immortalised with a lane in the Adelaide CBD.

The Angels Lane can be found between TAFE SA's City West campus and Hindley Street Music Hall, with the band joining fellow local artists Sia Furler, Cold Chisel, Paul Kelly and No Fixed Address to have a lane named after them.

Officially opened on Monday (August 4), members of the band, including founding members John and Rick Brewster, bass guitarist Chris Bailey, family members of the late singer-songwriter Bernard “Doc” Neeson and former singer Dave Gleason, were all in attendance.

As reported by ABC News, guitarist John Brewster explained how proud the band are to have been given the honour of having a lane named after them.

“We've been around for a while and to have our band, our history, revisited in such an incredible way … we're very excited,” he told ABC News.

“Starting the beginnings of The Angels here in this town and moving to Sydney in ‘76, that whole experience was very memorable. It just feels incredible. It's just such an honour and you know, we're all very proud.”

The Angels Lane also features two murals dedicated to the band, one on the side of Hindley Street Music Hall you can see from Morphett Street, and the other next to the recently installed Hindley Street public toilets. There are also lightboxes and projections beamed from TAFE SA created by Liam Somerville.

Lord Mayor Dr Jane Lomax-Smith was also on hand to pay tribute to the band. “From packed pubs to festival stages, The Angels helped shape the sound of South Australia and now their legacy has a permanent place in our city's streets,” she said, as reported by Mirage News.

“This honour both acknowledges rock royalty and reinforces Adelaide's global reputation as a UNESCO City of Music.”

The Angels were originally scheduled to receive a lane off Gawler Place in 2019, but bureaucratic paperwork got in the way, with the new location finally agreed upon last year.

The Angels are one of the country’s greatest rock and roll acts, having got their start in the ‘70s performing in pubs around Adelaide.

Across their 50 year career, the band has released six top ten charting albums – No Exit (1979), Dark Room (1980), Night Attack (1981), Two Minute Warning (1984), Howling (1986) and Beyond Salvation (1990) – along with a string of hit top 20 singles, including ‘Dogs Are Talking’, ‘We Gotta Get Outta This Place’ and ‘No Secrets’.

Last year, The Angels celebrated their 50th anniversary and released their 14th album, Ninety Nine, the first to feature new singer Nick Norton, who replaced longtime vocalist Dave Gleeson.

Proving just how popular the band are with modern audiences, The Angels’ hit single ‘Am I Ever Gonna See Your Face Again’ came in at #12 on triple j’s Hottest 100 of Australian Songs countdown.
