Having announced the release of their new studio album EIGHT, out Friday 17 April (pre-order here), Hermitude have shared their latest single, ‘Light Up’.
A collaboration with British punk duo Bob Vylan, ‘Light Up’ is a head-throbbing electronic explosion featuring Bob Vylan at their most political.
The track was written in Marrickville, Sydney, while Bob Vylan was touring Australia supporting Amyl & The Sniffers and captures the anxiety and tension of the modern world.
“Working with Bob Vylan in the studio was like hanging with a best mate,” shares Hermitude. “We chatted for a good hour before we hit record, but when that time came it was straight fire for the whole session. He'd just done multiple massive shows with Amyl & The Sniffers but he brought a huge and humble energy to the session. In no time at all he'd put down all his parts and even though he was exhausted, if he hadn't had to take a business call at midnight back in London, we might've gone til dawn.”
Fans can catch Hermitude on the road throughout April and May with support from IsGawn. Their tour kicks off at Newcastle’s Earp Distilling Co on Sunday 19 April, with dates following in Cairns’ The Factory on Saturday 2 May, Adelaide’s The Gov on Friday 15 May, Perth’s Ice Cream Factory on Saturday 16 May, Melbourne’s Northcote Theatre on Friday 22 May, Hobart’s Odeon on Saturday 23 May and Sydney’s Metro Theatre on Friday 29 May, with the tour wrapping up at Brisbane’s Tivoli on Saturday 30 May.

Hermitude’s eighth album is inspired by a range of genres, including techno, breaks and UK garage, as well as ‘90s rave culture. Along with Bob Vylan, the album also features DEVAURA, Adrian Dzvuke, and IsGwan and was mastered by Matt Colton (Tame Impala, Aphex Twin, Little Simz, James Blake).
“Joy feels vital right now, almost like an act of rebellion against your own sense of gloom,” the duo says of the record. “The dancefloor has always been one of the few places where differences dissolve”.
Visually, the record sees Hermitude working closely with acclaimed artist Michael Askew, creating an identity built around a remixed, colourful palette of stone tablets and ancient symbolism, reframed for modern dance culture.
One of the country’s most influential dance acts of the past two decades, Hermitude have released six albums, won the Australian Music Prize for their record HyperParadise and dropped multiple chart hit singles.
