Adelaide First Nations trailblazers Electric Fields and DEM MOB have been invited by the Lincoln Center for Performing Arts to perform at this year’s Summer for the City program in New York next month.
The incredible honour comes after delegates from the Lincoln Center visited Adelaide during the 2023 festival season and were inspired by both Electric Fields and DEM MOB’s performances and musical journeys.
Presented in collaboration with UNESCO Adelaide City of Music, the showcase is “celebrating South Australian First Nations” for one night only on Saturday, June 22 at The Dance Floor at Josie Robertson Plaza, Damrosch Park, New York.
The announcement comes after a huge 12 months for Electric Fields. The duo, comprising vocalist Zaachariaha Fielding and keyboardist and producer Michael Ross, has just represented Australia at Eurovision 2024. Although they didn’t win the competition, coming eleventh, their song, ‘One Milkali (One Blood)’, was a highlight of the competition.
Merging the soulful electronic productions of Ross with Fielding’s magnetic vocals – often sung in their native languages of the Anangu people – Electric Fields are sure to dazzle American audiences with their electro-pop tunes this June.
Not to be outdone, DEM MOB has also been out there getting it done, having just finished supporting Seth Sentry on his Australian tour. The first hip hop group to rap in the Pitjantjatjara language, DEM MOB is also heading to Toronto during their overseas trip to speak at the International Indigenous Music Summit about the music inspired education platform they are working on to help disadvantaged communities.
The opportunity for both Electric Fields and DEM MOB to be part of the Summer for the City program wouldn't be possible without the support of local government agencies. Both the Aboriginal Affairs and Reconciliation of the South Australian government and the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, along with Adelaide’s home of youth arts, Carclew, have played their part in helping both acts attend Summer for the City.
The event is an incredible chance for South Australia to showcase music and First Nations culture on the world stage and cement Adelaide’s position as Australia’s only UNESCO City of Music.
Electric Fields and DEM MOB play Summer for the City on Saturday, June 22 at The Dance Floor at Josie Robertson Plaza, Damrosch Park, New York. Tickets available here.
