Punk jokers Frenzal Rhomb have announced a massive 20-date Australian tour to celebrate the 23rd anniversary of their sixth studio album, Sans Souci.

The current lineup of sole original member Jason “Jay” Whalley, alongside Lindsay “The Doctor” McDougall, Gordon “Gordy” Forman and Michael “Dal” Dallinger, will play all the big tracks from the record, including crowd favourites ‘Bucket Bong’, ‘I Went Out With A Hippy And Now I Love Everyone Except For Her’, ‘Cocksucker’ and the hilarious ‘Russell Crowe’s Band’.

Taking to the Gram to announce the tour, the band posted a lengthy statement about their reasons for celebrating Sans Souci’s 23rd anniversary.

“So let’s get down to the nitty gritty: Frenzal Rhomb’s Sans Souci is turning 23 - and we’re celebrating!” the band began.

“Here at Frenzal Rhomb, the number 23 has always been important to us. 23 pairs of human chromosomes, William Burroughs’ 23 enigma, Psalm 23 in the bible, ‘the Lord is my shepherd’; we’ve always been big with shepherds.

“Actually, that’s all nonsense, we just missed the 20th, and the world may not make it until the 25th, so this year we’re celebrating the 23rd anniversary of Sans Souci!

“The difficult sixth album, Sans Souci saw us back with Camel producer Eddie Ashworth for sixteen sweet servings of shrewd social commentary slid inside some superb punk pop skins, including the green-tinged morality tale of ‘Bucket Bong’, the complicated relationship drama of ‘I Went Out With A Hippy And Now I Love Everyone Except For Her’, even trying our hand at sports metal with ‘Punisher’.

“There was the Kernaghan-esque ‘Looking Good’, the Gastro-rock of ‘Ballchef’, and that song about Russell Crowe’s band we’ve been advised by our lawyers not to talk about.

“And heaps more! And we’re gonna play them all* on the Frenzal Rhomb Sans Souci 23rd Anniversary Tour. A marquee event! And it’s still French for ‘no worries’.

“Get tickets now before Russell Crowe’s lawyers get back in touch!

“*look we may not make it through the whole album, and we probably won’t play it in order. So don’t go getting all weird and complain like that one person did on the Camel tour. We’ll give it all a red hot go though.”

Frenzal Rhomb kick things off at Adelaide’s The Gov on Thursday 13 August, before hitting Canberra, Jindabyne, Barwon Heads, Melbourne, Rockhampton, Mackay, Townsville, Cairns, Perth, Bunbury, Margaret River, Duncraig, Sydney, Newcastle, Byron Bay, Woolloongabba, Caloundra and Hobart, bringing the tour to a close at Forth Pub in Forth, Tasmania, on Friday 20 November

They might be a bunch of ratbags, but it’s hard not to love Frenzal Rhomb. Formed in Sydney in the early ‘90s, the group became known for their catchy riffs and humorous lyrics.

It was the band’s fourth album A Man's Not a Camel that saw them crossover into the mainstream thanks to the singles ‘You Are Not My Friend’, ‘Never Had So Much Fun’ and ‘We're Going Out Tonight’.

Frenzal Rhomb have released 10 albums across their 30-plus-year career, with their most recent, 2023’s The Cup of Pestilence, proving they have lost none of the frantic punk energy or silly lyrics that made the band darlings of the local scene.
