After several years away from the spotlight, Grace Woodroofe returned earlier this year with new single ‘I Love You Babe’. Now the Perth-born, Melbourne-based singer and guitarist has shared follow-up track ‘Happy Again’, a thrilling shoegaze-inspired pop ditty about falling in love.
Produced by Holy Holy’s Oscar Dawson, Woodroofe’s vocals meld perfectly with the shimmering instrumentation, resulting in a raw, refreshingly honest tune exploring the ecstasy of love described by the singer as “overwhelming and beautiful all at once.”
She continues, “‘Happy Again’ gives me a full-body, visceral reaction. The music sounds exactly how it felt: pure release, an explosion of adrenaline and total surrender. When Oscar and I began writing, I told him I wanted the song to feel like looking up through the leaves of a tree and suddenly being blinded by the sun. At the end of the song, I repeat “I never thought I would be happy again” over and over.
“Screaming those words was so emotional and cathartic for me. I truly felt saved. As the guitar turns manic, my whole body gives over, just like I did in the relationship. I was his entirely, no matter the cost. I wanted this song to capture that feeling of being consumed, of giving myself over to the explosion.”

Discovered and signed to Heath Ledger’s The Masses Music label at age 17, Woodroofe burst onto the scene shortly after with her Ben Harper produced debut album, Always Want. The album peaked at #3 on the Australian iTunes Charts and produced the hit singles ‘Battles’ and ‘Transformer’.
Performing at Splendour in the Grass, Bluefest and SXSW, Woodroofe has also shared the stage with the likes of alt-j, Glass Animals, Matt Corby, Cat Power, Jack Johnson, Paul Kelly & Neil Finn and Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros.
Sharing her follow-up EP Love It Need It Miss It Want It in 2015 under the alias R.W. Grace, Woodroofe was poised for superstardom when her life was consumed by an emotionally abusive relationship.
Taking a break from making music, Woodroofe has spent the past few years healing. She’s found her way back to music and is excited to reveal her truth through song.
‘Happy Again’ by Grace Woodroofe is out now independently.
