The latest album from duo Dave Graney and Clare Moore is here. Described by Graney and Moore as a rock album, Laburnum of The Mind is an album of two halves which includes the recently released singles ‘Hits Are The Worst’ and ‘I Ain't Got No Float’.
Recorded in Melbourne at Soundpark with Idge, who also mastered the album, Laburnum of The Mind was mixed by Graney and Moore, who performed all the instruments on the record, with mistLY guitarist Stuart Perera roped in to collaborate on two tracks.
Speaking about the album and their reason for calling it a rock record, Graney and Moore elaborate, “When we say ‘rock’, I guess we would be thinking of The Doors, Wire, Urge Overkill, Steely Dan, Queens Of the Stone Age, The Replacements, Pulp, Roxy Music, The Fall, The Blue Oyster Cult and those kinds of tones. Those kinds of lyrical flights and suspensions. Bo Diddley and Latin beats and diminished and augmented chords. Expensive inversions. Flash stuff. Though there is also a lot of dumb, irrational, loose and goofy as well”.
And the title? “Laburnum is a stop on the Belgrave train line from the CBD to the outer suburbs of South East Melbourne. Not a suburb, a stop.”
Graney and Moore are taking their new album on the road for an extensive tour that includes 17 stops in six different states and territories. The tour kicks off with two shows in SA at Goolwa’s Murray Delta Juke Box on Friday 15 May and Adelaide’s The Wheatsheaf Hotel on Saturday 16 May.

Dave Graney and Clare Moore have been performing together since 1978. The pair have been involved with a slew of bands, including Dave Graney and The Coral Snakes and Dave Graney and The Lurid Yellow Mist, while also releasing more than half a dozen albums as a duo.
Kicking off their tour next month, for those who haven't witnessed them live, you're in for a treat - take it from David Pepperell aka Dr Pepper, who had this to say about the duo:
“Dave performs his compositions with such elan and sophistication that he draws you into his world and holds you there until the last note of the night. Singer-songwriters often seem self-obsessed, but to me Dave sings about a world he would like to live in and possibly thinks by singing said songs he could bring that about. He sings well too - and his guitar playing was exemplary all through the show.
“Stuart Perera’s perfectly aligned Rickenbercker playing, smooth bassist Stu Thomas and his very charming wife Clare Moore on drums provided him with a solid foundation to elucidate his dreams and inspirations - songs with character and belief plus a very wry view of this maybe crumbling world.
“Dave is a gem, polished to a high sheen, rare in the current charivari that one has to endure when sampling the music scene these days. He is not to be missed - I have not had such a pleasurable night out in years. He is certainly at his peak now after battling around the traps for some years - get out and see him while he still takes such enjoyment in presenting his creations to you all.”
