Iconic SA live music venue The Bridgeway Hotel, which played a major role in supporting Aussie talent during the ‘80s, has been sold to an interstate hospitality group.
As first reported by the Advertiser, SA’s Fahey Hotel Group are selling The Bridgeway in Pooraka, along with the Lakes Hotel in West Lakes and The Maid Hotel in Magill, to NSW hospitality giants Oscars Group.
The Oscars Group own a stack of pubs, hotels and hospitality-related venues across NSW and are looking to expand their empire in Australia.
According to the Advertiser, a memo to Fahey Hotel Group staff explains the three hotels are in the “process of being purchased” by Oscars.
“It’s with much emotion that the Fahey Family must announce the Lakes Hotel, Bridgeway Hotel and Maid Hotel are currently in the process of being purchased by the Oscars Group,” the family wrote in the memo.
“They want to expand to the Adelaide Market and judging by their current venues in Australia they don’t do things by halves with incredible venues.
“This has been an incredibly difficult decision for the family as the hotels have been part of our family for so many years.
“You, our team, mean so much more to us than just staff. We could not be prouder of what, together, we have all achieved in our time in these hotels.”
The Bridgeway Hotel played an integral role in South Australia’s live music scene in the ‘80s, with a who’s who of local artists performing at the pub. Cold Chisel, The Angels and Midnight Oil all took to the stage at the suburban pub back in the day.
In recent years, modern acts including Grinspoon and The Butterfly Effect have also played there.
It will be interesting to see if there are any operational changes to all three pubs once the sale is complete, or if it will be business as usual.
