Motor Ace was one of the country’s most loved bands during their seven years in the spotlight. Their 1999 self-titled EP got them triple j play and led to the release of their 2001 debut album, Five Star Laundry, which peaked at #4 on the ARIA Albums Chart. A massive success thanks to the hit singles ‘American Shoes’, ‘Death Defy’ and ‘Hey Driver’, Motor Ace wasted no time delivering their follow-up album Shoot This, which arrived a year later and debuted at #1 on the ARIA Albums Chart.
But as the grind of touring started taking its toll, along with frontman Patrick Robertson’s health issues, the band went on hiatus for several years before returning in 2005 with their third and final album, Animal.
2019 saw Robertson, Damian Birchall Costin, Matt Balfe and Dave Ong reunite for a run of Australian shows to coincide with the release of Five Star Laundry and Shoot This on vinyl, as well as the compilation B-Sides & Demos online.
Motor Ace released their first new single in 17 years, ‘Knock Knock’, in 2022 and also toured Australia, with plans for a 2023 tour put on hold, with the band promising to be back soon.
