Three years on since the release of Formentera II, Canadian indie rockers Metric are back with brand new single, ‘Victim of Luck’.

The first tease of new music from the group’s forthcoming tenth studio album, Romanticize The Dive, out 24 April on Thirty Tigers (pre-order here), ‘Victim of Luck’ harks back to the sound of early Metric, with frontwoman Emily Haines having this to say about the track:

“The song ‘Victim Of Luck’ and really the entire album is about the romance of a less-than-perfect life. It’s about dropping the mask of self-consciousness and vanity. It was a long journey for me to get out of my own way and I wanted this song to be a rallying cry for that, better late than never. You can be as much a victim of good luck as bad.

“So when we started out, yes we were broke and we were playing to ten people and there was nothing for us to fall back on but we refused to give up, and it’s not as though we’re all superstar billionaires now, but that was never what we were after.

“It turns out the grind is the thing you wouldn’t trade and the bonds you made can’t be faked. What we wanted is what we have and we’re not victims of anything. We dedicated our lives to each other and it’s the best feeling in the world.”

An official music video for ‘Victim of Luck’ has also been released, comprising previously unseen archival footage of band life, from touring in vans and goofing around backstage.

Metric, comprising Emily Haines (vocals, keys), Jimmy Shaw (producer, guitar, keys), Joshua Winstead  (bass guitar, keys) and Joules Scott Key (drums), have been a constant in the indie rock scene for more than two decades.

In that time, the Canadian outfit have releaed nine studio albums, including their critically acclaimed 2009 record Fantasies, which spawned hit singles ‘Help I’m Alive’, ‘Gimmie Sympathy’, ‘Sick Muse’ and ‘Gold Guns Girls’.

The band have also contributed several songs to massive motion pictures, with the song ‘Black Sheep’ appearing in the 2010 film adaptation Scott Pilgrim vs The World and the band writing the theme song ‘Eclipse (All Yours)’ for The Twilight Saga: Eclipse soundtrack, a song Metric co-wrote with Howard Shore.
