September 26 - Noteworthy New Releases

Our favourite releases of the week.

Jupiter Saloon – ‘Groove On’

Indie soul duo Jupiter Saloon are back with the blues rocker ‘Groove On’. Much like the title suggests, this one will have you swaying along in your living room.

Citing Duffy, J Dilla, Primal Scream and George Michael as influences, the song is all about having a good time and features vocalist Elosie Addams letting loose over Nick Pipe’s pulse-quickening guitar riff. There’s also some nifty piano action in this one, adding another dimension to the track.

“It isn’t that deep – it’s about that fuzzy feeling when everything is going right, the sun is beaming down on you… you’re set to have a great night with your best mates, and get your groove on,” Eloise says.

To celebrate the release of ‘Groove On’, Jupiter Saloon are playing a free show at Adelaide’s Grace Emily Hotel tonight, Friday 26 September, supported by Marina Anthea and Bella Brinkworth.

Sounds like: Date night at an American diner.

Stonegrill – ‘Spring In My Step’

Straight out of the gate, this one reminds me of Airbourne. Just like the Melbourne Aussie rockers who spend most of their time touring Europe, Stonegrill have nailed the hard rock sound of the ‘80s without sounding like a carbon copy of bands from that era.

‘Spring In My Step’ is a boisterous, balls-to-the-wall injection of classic rock and roll with an enthralling guitar riff that hits like a slap to the face with a wet fish.

This is one for the long-haired, denim jacket-wearing beer swillers who like their music hard, fast and loud. Or those who like to rock out.

Sounds like: Dive bar dreaming.

SYCAMORE – ‘Old Adelaide’

After several years in the musical wilderness, SYCAMORE return with the nostalgic ‘Old Adelaide’.

A track that was first unearthed five years ago, ‘Old Adelaide’ addresses the feelings of sadness that come when someone close to you moves away. It’s an emotion we’ve all felt in some shape or form, but few have expressed this type of loss and yearning in such a poetic manner as SYCAMORE.

There’s a bittersweet notion to ‘Old Adelaide’, with the quartet sure to have you reminiscing about those fleeting connections you’ve had throughout your life journey.

Sounds like: Home.

Normal Behavioiur – ‘Famous’

It’s always a welcome surprise when Normal Behaviour have a new release doing the rounds. Their music is easily categorised as indie rock, but there’s so much more to this genre-bending act.

‘Famous’ is as close to a pop anthem as Normal Behaviour have ever written, something they acknowledge themselves.

Written after spending time in LA during their first North American tour, the track is built around an infectious riff that gives way to an energetic chorus with the song’s title chanted with exuberance.

Sounds like: Hollywood.

Nat Luna – ‘off my chest’

‘off my chest’ is the final single taken from Nat Luna’s alluring debut EP ultraviolet (which is out now and well worth a listen).

Continuing her musical evolution, the track is a powerful R&B meets synth lurker that’s sonically reminiscent of Doja Cat with a little sprinkling of The Weeknd.

Luna’s sultry voice is the star of the show, but she also showcases her rapping abilities mid-song, dropping bars over the thumping bass production.

This is dark, tempting pop music you’ll have on repeat.

Sounds like: 2am in the club.

JesseMelancholy – ‘cranium’

The crew at The Note are big fans of JesseMelancholy. You never know what to expect when one of his songs arrives in the inbox. His sound encompasses a wide range of genres, from emo and pop to electronic and rock.

Hard to pin down but always intriguing, JesseMelancholy describes ‘cranium’ as an alt-pop earworm – the type of track that buries itself deep within your subconscious.

Produced by Cmplxtra, mixed by JesseMelancholy and mastered by Xenura, ‘cranium’ is an alluring emo electro hybrid featuring pitch-shifted vocals that make it sound like two different people are singing on the track.

Made for late-night drives and midnight walks, ‘cranium’ is another wonderful showcase of JessMelancholy’s musical abilities.

Sounds like: Neon lights.
