April 23 - Noteworthy New Releases

Our favourite releases of the week.

effie isobel – ‘Moon Made

It’s been almost a year since effie isobel released ‘Peach Heart’, the charming follow-up to her 2023 debut single, ‘Lip Balm’. While we’ve had to wait for her third offering, it’s been worth it, with ‘Moon Made’ a soaring indie pop rocket of good vibes.

“This song is for yearning, worshipping ur femme, lighting candles and dancing in ur room, getting messy eating fruit,” isobel posted on Instagram.

There’s a bit of Olivia Rodrigo to this one, with isobel showing she has the chops to match it with today’s modern pop stars. Heartwarming stuff.

The Kavs – ‘Venice’

‘Venice’ is the first track taken from local rockers The Kavs’ forthcoming sophomore EP. Inspired by a Euro trip leading to a casual encounter with a woman named, you guessed it, Venice, the track is a bold rock and roller with all the swagger of a luxury yacht ride through the Mediterranean.

“It’s not all canal boats and old buildings that people would expect,” the band says, “but it was a brief encounter our guitarist Jake had with a beautiful soul that sparked the main riff which we jammed on when he got home. Before too long, we had this song. It’s a little bright, a little sensual, and a little nostalgic.”

The biggest surprise comes at the three-minute mark when the song evolves into a psych rock party with a wild guitar lick before culminating with the song’s anthemic hook. Mark down The Kavs as ones to watch.

Modern RElics – ‘Bitter Honey’

A staple of Modern Relics’ live show, it’s easy to see why ‘Bitter Honey’ has been so well received by fans.

The band’s second single has a real ‘click your fingers’ vibe and explores the bittersweet memories of lost love.

It’s an infectious groover that takes inspiration from modern Arctic Monkeys, with a funky riff driving the song forward.

Keyan – ‘Oscillate’

‘Oscillate’ is the second in a trilogy of prog singles from acclaimed guitarist KEYAN. Teaming with the UK's Connor Kaminski, the two have crafted a stunning display of challenging riffs that echo Periphery’s best work.

At almost seven minutes long, this one takes you on a sonic journey through bluesy grooves, thumping double kick drums and several quiet moments that lull you into a sense of tranquillity before it all kicks off again.

Destinezia - ‘Away’

Destinezia have put together quite the catalogue in their short time together. This week, the band added to their burgeoning repertoire with the release of their debut EP, Do They Know?.

Five tracks of glorious indie rock, the EP includes the previously released ‘Slow’ and ‘Words’, along with the standout track ‘Away’.

This is quintessential indie rock, with the bouncing synth line and dual male/female vocals giving it a point of difference. Think Alvvays meets Ball Park Music and you’re somewhere to pinpointing the feel of this one.

Greasey Rhysy – ‘Of Course YOu CAn’

Producer and live looping artist Greasey Rhysy has shared his debut project, A Soundscape To Escape. The record features nine improvised instrumental tracks recorded live at Myponga’s Palomino Sound Recordings with Tristen Bird.

An intriguing free-form jazz meets looping concoction, the album is chock full of interesting beats and loops, with ‘Of Course You Can’ a clear highlight. Flirty guitars dance with a boom-bap beat, making this track the perfect instrumental for an MC to spit over.

Greasey Rhysy’s A Soundscape To Escape isn’t for everyone, but those who love a good beat and a bit of experimental instrumentation will get a kick out of this one.
