Our favourite releases of the week.
Blinder – ‘Hurting’
Newcomers blinder are staking their claim as Adelaide’s most exciting purveyors of nu metal. The quartet’s debut single is a shoegazey torrent of distorted guitars and cathartic screams, co-produced with ARIA-nominated Callan Orr (Dream On Dreamer, Hands Like Houses), that echoes early Deftones merged with contemporary alt-rockers Thornhill. Nu metal is back, baby!
Sounds like: The early ‘00s.
Bjéar – ‘Sing Again’
LA-based South Aussie Bjéar follows up his stunning September EP After The Rain with sparkling new tune ‘Sing Again’. Eschewing the vocal manipulation and murky sonics of previous releases for a symphonic burst of indie-pop melodies, ‘Sing Again’ is what Matt Berninger would sound like if he were an Aussie and a little less depressed.
Sounds like: Missing home.
Fair Call – ‘Bordertown’
As soon as the opening riff hits, ‘Bordertown’ draws you into the frazzled pub-punk rock world of emerging scoundrels Fair Call. This track is made for a live crowd and is sure to cause a few bloody noses from stray arms in the mosh. If West End Draught had a sound, this would be it.

effie isobel – ‘Higher Gear’
effie isobel’s sugary latest is a vibrant burst of indie-pop about crushing hard. Wrapped up in gritty guitars, swirling synths and isobel’s layered harmonies, ‘Higher Gear’ is a bouncy bedroom-pop explosion sure to make your heart swell.
Sounds like: Pure magic.
