Our favourite releases of the week.
Weekend Rage – ‘Big Ninnis’
After seven years together, Weekend Rage are sadly calling it quits, but not before dropping a studio version of live staple ‘Big Ninnis’. An alt-rocker referencing shoeys, burgers and good times, the track perfectly sums up Weekend Rage.
Sounds like: A tasty slice of Adelaide.
Fair Call – ‘Galvanise’
Fans of ‘90s Aussie rock should give emerging quartet Fair Call’s latest a spin. It’s heavy enough to get the kids moshing with an entrancing melodic symmetry between Curtis Narayanan’s finger picking and frontman Josh Ormsby’s distorted drawl. Think Screamfeeder, Ammonia, Rocket Science type vibes.
Sounds like: Alt-rock nostalgia.
Draining – ‘You & I’
Draining describes themselves as an “alternative shoegaze band”, but there’s much more going on under the surface. Take their latest gut punch, ‘You & I’. It’s the perfect balance of heavy instrumentation, aggressive screaming and clean vocals with a nod to the early nu metal scene. The explosive final 30-second tempo change is thrilling.
Sounds like: Early Deftones.
Jen Lush & the Feild – ‘Wolf & the Dog’
After two years away from the spotlight, folk rock singer-songwriter Jen Lush returns with the haunting ‘Wolf & the Dog’. Inspired by Georgia Blain’s novel Between a Wolf and a Dog, the track features Lush’s band The Field and deals with themes of love and loss.
Sounds like: Blissfully enchanting.
