September 05 - Noteworthy New Releases

Our favourite releases of the week.

The Kavs – ‘Huntriss St’

‘Huntriss St’ is the groovy final single taken from The Kavs’ upcoming sophomore EP. Following on from the tracks ‘You Don’t Know’ and ‘Venice’, the band’s latest is another stylish indie rocker oozing summer vibes.

Inspired by the home in the western suburbs band members Oscar, Jake and Liam have called home for close to a decade, ‘Huntriss St’ is a giddy guitar explosion that will have you dancing around the room.

“It highlights the savouring of small moments and the feeling of not wanting to leave, knowing that someday you will,” lyricist Oscar Keating explains. “And when that day comes, the memories of it all will come with you.”

Sounds like: A summer anthem.

Zara Chantelle – ‘When The Weekend Ends’

Emerging singer-songwriter Zara Chantelle has shared her delightful second single, ‘When the Weekend Ends’.

Currently studying Popular Music at the Conservatorium of Adelaide, Chantelle’s new tune captures feelings of vulnerability and self-doubt, with the 18-year-old talent crafting an emotive pop track with echoes of Gracie Abrams and Olivia Rodrigo.

If you like what you hear, be sure to give her debut single ‘Happiness’ a whirl and catch her performing live at a venue near you.

Sounds like: A productive therapy session.

Buddy J Francis - ‘Alone Again’

Buddy J Francis is hard to pin down. He’s somewhat of a genre chameleon. Francis has dabbled in rock, hip hop, folk and even comedy, but his latest project is an indie folk record led by the single, ‘Alone Again’.

Written, recorded and mixed by Franics, ‘Alone Again’ is quite a departure from his last release. The track is a lo-fi experiment with subtle nuances that finds the music allrounder singing about the ups and downs of travelling solo, from meeting incredible people to those lonely moments when you’re on your own.

There’s a hypnotic element to ‘Along Again’, with the rhythmic drumming and gentle finger picking resulting in three and a half minutes of audio bliss.

Sounds like: An old friend.

The EMpty Threats – ‘want someone’

How good are The Empty Threats? So good is the correct answer. The emerging noise punk collective continues to inspire and beguile with each new release ahead of their hotly anticipated sophomore album, happy birthday.

The fourth and final single from the record, ‘want someone’, is reverb reverb-heavy hit of fuzzy guitars and frontperson Stu Patterson’s captivating howl, with Grace Vandals adding a touch of sweetness thanks to her lush backing vocals.

‘want someone’ is confirmation that The Empty Threats are one of the country’s most exciting acts, and if you still have doubts, go see them perform live at Jive on Saturday 20 September (tickets on sale here) – your mind will be blown.

Sounds like: Controlled chaos.
