June 2025: Five To Try

Hungry for some new hospitality openings? Read on and find your new favourite eatery.

Nowhere Bar

Reimagining the former Oliva Hotel on Hutt Street, Nowhere Bar feels like grabbing a pint with an old friend. It’s obvious that being a hub for the community comes first here – from its cosy interior choices (think warm orange accents and walls covered in giant doodled flowers) to its drinks list that turns its nose up at the stuffy and the pretentious. Here, the wine poured is often from local producers, with a laid-back snack menu that prioritises fresh SA flavours to match. And just when you thought it couldn’t get any better, Adelaide’s renowned blues/rock frontman Dusty Lee Stephensen has struck up a Sunday residency at this new drinks den. What a way to end the week!

Yes please: The dupe of Anthony Bourdain’s fave sandwich – mortadella and provolone in a roll with Dijon mustard and mayonnaise. Excellent stuff.

Where: 170 Hutt Street, Adelaide

Shadow Baking

From the brains behind Messina Gelato comes Shadow Baking – a bayside (you guessed it) bakery serving sweet treats and savoury goods from Wednesday to Sunday. What to expect? Fresh focaccia and pastries baked daily, plus bites that break your brain a little (in a good way). Think Vegemite, avocado and fermented chilli scrolls, Reuben croissants and pandan and coconut brioche. Yum. Unlike its sibling venues on the eastern seaboard, the Glenelg iteration has evolved past its grab ‘n’ go operation, inviting passerbys to press pause and savour their baked goods inside the industrial fit-out.

Yes please: Fennel sausage focaccia.

Latte Studio Unley

Adelaide’s melting pot of culture has never tasted better than at Latte Studio Unley. The little sister venue to the Torrensville eatery of the same name opened quietly in November, taking shape inside the light and bright digs that previously belonged to Gang Gang on Unley Road. Here, an imaginative brunch that takes cues from Korea is the star of the show. Think bulgogi beef and eggs Benedict, a KFC sando (subbing Kentucky for Korea, of course) and a kimchi cheese sandwich. Wash your morning feed down with artisan coffee (the espresso con panna is our pick), a homemade strawberry matcha or a mont blanc – delish!

Yes please: The ‘Crowasabi’ – salmon, spinach and a poached egg on a croissant, drizzled with house-made wasabi sauce.

Where: 69 Unley Road, Parkside

Hooked

You’d be hard pressed to find a better feed on the fly than a fish and chip joint. Heck, they’ve been serving hungry hordes on the go since the 1860s. However, you shouldn’t expect your usual, run-of-the-mill greasy grub at SA’s latest takeaway joint, Hooked. The brainchild of hospo maverick Sam Worrall-Thompson (Bar Lune, Dolly, Spread, Oliveti), this eatery is dishing up silver service flavours in convenient grab-n-go containers. We’re talking a dozen fresh oysters (or Kilpatrick, if that’s how you like ‘em), sashimi with green tomato and blood orange, and your choice of fish (whiting, cod, squid) cooked your way (crumbed, beer battered or baked). There are the usual suspects on offer, too: fried scallop potatoes, burgers and daily salads for a bit of green. Enjoy this fresh feed on the beach Friday and Saturday arvos until late.

Yes please: The Deep Sea fish burger with wasabi tartare and cos lettuce.

Super Americano

A quick look at Peter De Marco’s credentials (Pizza e Mozzarella, Bora, Chicco Palms, Valentino’s) and you know you’re in safe hands when dining at Super Americano. Brunch by day with dinner on weekends, this hole-in-the-wall on Glen Osmond Road punches well above its weight. Feed yourself on Neapolitan-style pizza (the hot samali with chilli honey is a win), veal meatball-stuffed sandos (served on four-day fermented, wood-fired bread, no less) and brunch classics. No flavour here is underdone or overwhelming. Don’t forget to raid the bodega for some take-home goods on your way out.

Yes please: A wood-fired mortadella and stracciatella cheese pizza topped with pistachios.

Where: 209 Glen Osmond Road, Frewville
