To the surprise of many, the Ed Castle appears to have closed less than three months after announcing it was reopening under new management.
This Saturday’s Gig has moved to Little Red Door.
The Ed – serving as the Edinburgh Castle since 1837 on Currie Street – closed both Instagram and Facebook pages on February 9. Acts have been cancelled. The once-iconic live music venue had been reopened under new management in December. The venue had just started booking live music again under new ownership, with their first weekend of gigs held just seven days ago. Bands booked to play as part of February’s live music schedule, including Modern Relics, Bortier Okoe and DJ Georgia Oatley, have been left looking for new venues, with Ben Iota and The Rogues now playing at The Little Red Door on Hindley St this Saturday with all tickets still valid. In an Instagram post, musician Ben Iota wrote: “I was advised this morning that the [Ed Castle] have experienced some unforeseen circumstances. Luckily Inskwel scrambled for us and now we have a fresh venue… tickets are still valid.” DJ Georgia Oatley posted: “Gig cancelled – in a strange turn of events the newly reopened Ed Castle has closed!” If confirmed, the closure is a blow for live music in Adelaide, after many closures, however this closure appears to have occurred even before the venue re-opened and under strange circumstances. This initiative from the South Australian Government closes next week with the aim of supporting venues. The Note has reached out to the owners for comment with no response, however we will keep readers updated.
