Noni Hazlehurst has done it all, from hosting Play School and Better Homes and Gardens to starring in City Homicide and Aussie drama Little Fish. Now, the stage and screen icon is set to light up Adelaide Festival Centre’s Space Theatre with her one-woman show The Lark.
Making its Adelaide premiere from Wednesday 24 June to Sunday 5 July, the production is a powerful meditation on life, death and change.
Originally commissioned and produced by Arts Centre Melbourne and Hey Dowling, The Lark comes from the creative minds of playwright Daniel Keene and director Matt Scholten, the duo behind 2015’s award-winning production Mother.
Hazlehurst has been a mainstay in film, theatre and television for 50 years, with her extensive body of work resulting in a host of accolades, including two Logie Awards for Best Supporting Actress.
The Lark follows Rose Grey as she says her final goodbye to her local Melbourne pub, The Lark, which is due for demolition. As she remembers the impact The Lark has had on her life, from the people she met and the experiences she had there, “Rose must break free from the past before it claims her forever,” reads the press release.

Speaking about her experience working with Keene and Matt Scholten, Hazlehurst says, “The opportunity to work with Daniel and Matt creating Mother was a rare privilege and a joy. To have the chance to collaborate again on The Lark is a miracle. No actor could ask for more.”
Playwright Keene adds, “It has been a joy to write The Lark for such a skilled and generous actor as Noni Hazlehurst. Setting the play in the heart of Melbourne, our hometown, has enriched the writing and empowered Noni’s performance. The play is both a celebration of and an elegy for a very particular place in our shared cultural landscape.”
