The Adelaide Film Festival (AFF) is dropping its full program on September 17, but this week organisers have revealed several more films set to feature as part of this year’s event.
The Opening Weekend Gala on Friday, October 25 will be headlined by the Cannes prize-winning flick, Emilia Pérez. Directed by Jacques Audiard and starring Selena Gomez, Zoe Saldana and Karla Sofia Gascon, the film is a musical crime caper that’s been receiving rave reviews. Making the screening even more special is the AFF’s partnership with LA BOMBA, who will be providing Mexican dancers, roving entertainers, Latin DJs and tasty treats to celebrate the film’s Australian premiere.
Anora, director Sean Baker’s reimagining of Hollywood romantic comedy Pretty Woman, and writer and director Kelly Schilling’s With or Without You, a moving story about a young woman, her alcoholic mother and a West African man who find themselves on an unexpected trip, are also part of this year’s festival lineup.
These films join the first lineup announcement that includes the opening night (Wednesday, October 23) world premiere of The Correspondent. The movie is based on the true story of Aussie war correspondent Peter Greste, who was jailed in Cairo, Egypt while working for broadcaster Al Jazeera in 2013. The following evening a special In Conversation with the film’s director Kriv Stenders, actors Richard Roxburgh and Julian Maroun and producer and former journalist Carmel Travers will be held at Adelaide’s Capri Cinema.

If that’s not enough for cinephiles, the 2024 AFF Youth Screening Day (taking place Wednesday, October 30) returns with the climate activism documentary Future Council, the coming-of-age feature film Young Hearts and selected shorts from the AFF Youth Filmmaking Competition. Schools are encouraged to book school excursions so students can learn about the local film industry and the career pathways it offers.
There will also be a special Australian premiere screening of Dust to Dust during Adelaide Fashion Week on October 11. This doco focuses on Yuima Nakazato, the second-ever Japanese designer invited to Paris Haute Couture Fashion Week. The film plots the creation of his new collection using green technology.
The Adelaide Film Festival runs from Wednesday, October 23 – Sunday, November 3. The full program will be released on Tuesday, September 17. For more details regarding films, times and tickets, visit adelaidefilmfestival.org.
