The Adelaide premiere of the acclaimed exhibition Empress Joséphine’s Garden takes over Immersive Light and Art (ILA) from 11 April to 17 May.
After a record-breaking debut at the Western Australian Museum, the large-scale digital experience, created and produced by award-winning studio AGB Creative in partnership with the Western Australian Museum, takes punters on an immersive journey through one of the world’s most celebrated botanical collections in history, the gardens of Joséphine Bonaparte.
“Following the success of our immersive exhibition Manifest Destiny in the Adelaide Festival, Empress Joséphine’s Garden continues our vision for creative programming at ILA,” says ILA Creative Director Melissa Lee.
“While many people know the name of Napoleon Bonaparte, fewer are familiar with the remarkable accomplishments of his talented wife. Joséphine’s story offers a fascinating perspective on history, science and global discovery that still resonates today.”
Held in ILA’s studio and gallery space, visitors enter a reimagined ILA Gallery that resembles a thriving garden, then proceed to the studio, where wall-to-wall LED screens broadcast digital florals, cinematic visuals, narration and an evocative musical score by Australian artists.
The exhibition explains how Joséphine curated her garden and its connection to Australia while also exploring themes of exploration, science, and cultural exchange.

Speaking about the exhibit, AGB Creative CEO, Anthony Basic AM, says, “We are thrilled to bring Empress Joséphine to ILA. This exhibition is an acknowledgment of her influence on the arts and sciences and her timeless legacy shaping modern society. Utilising technology we can showcase this in a vivid and engaging manner.”
The multi-sensory experience includes contributions from Adelaide-based academics Professor Emeritus of French Studies John West-Sooby and Emeritus Professor of French Studies Jean Fornasiero (Adelaide University), blending spectacle with historical insight.
