Ahead of his WOMADelaide debut, Melbourne-based Brazilian artist Alcides Neto has shared new single ‘Ari, Sérgio, Melo, Marco, Merda’, the latest taste of his upcoming debut album Amu, out Friday 27 February via Music in Exile (pre-order here).
Released on his birthday, the song begins with a recorded conversation between his Grandma and Aunty, before a playful guitar lick enters the frame and Neto’s soulful vocals take over the partido alto groove.
“It’s a little chronicle about me and the day I was born,” Neto explains. “I was born on Friday the 13th, and that day had 25 hours because daylight saving time ended. The song also talks about my grandma calling my uncles’ and cousins’ names first, then saying “damn it,” and finally getting to mine. It's a story of small, fun, everyday moments from life.”
‘Ari, Sérgio, Melo, Marco, Merda’ follows the previously released songs ‘Amuleto’ and ‘Canforá’, all of which appear on Neto’s forthcoming debut, which he began writing during lockdown. The album’s eight tracks are inspired by his childhood growing up in the countryside of São Paulo state, Brazil.
