After teasing fans with new track ‘Drone’, a desert rocker that dropped back in June, WA prog-rockers Karnivool have officially announced the release of their much-anticipated fourth long player, In Verses.
Arriving Friday 6 February via Cymatic Records/Sony Music (pre-order/pre-save here), In Verses was recorded in the band’s Perth studio with longtime collaborator Forrester Savell.
More than ten years in the making, the album’s ten tracks “journey collective feelings of frustration, catharsis and a rediscovery of identity,” with Karnivool stating the album is the perfect reintroduction for longtime fans and the ideal starting point for newcomers.
To coincide with the album announcement, Karnivool have also shared new single ‘Aozora’. Inspired by the Japanese term for “blue sky”, the track is a complex prog experiment exploring themes of escapism, oppression and human freedom.
“The whole theme for that song is escaping, or waiting to escape,” offers vocalist Ian Kenny. “Trying to find a way to escape yourself. The idea of finding freedom in the blue. Trying to find freedom amongst the complications of just being human. We’re so weird, you know? Trying to understand that at different times along the road, sometimes you end up with more questions than answers.”

Currently performing in venues across the country on their Ad Complementum Tour, Karnivool have been at the forefront of Australia’s progressive rock scene for more than two decades.
With only three albums to their name – Themata (2005), Sound Awake (2009) and the ARIA Chart #1 Asymmetry (2013) – the Perth quintet have gained a global following and won an incredible 17 Western Australian Music Industry Awards.
The current lineup of OG members Ian Kenny (lead vocals) and Drew Goddard (guitar, backing vocals), alongside Jon Stockman (bass, unclean vocals), Mark Hosking (guitar, backing vocals) and Steve Judd (drums), are pumped for the release of In Verses and can’t wait to share the album with audiences next year.
