After reuniting earlier this year for a run of shows across the country, Phantastic Ferniture have surprised fans with the release of their first new music in seven years with the singles ‘Change My Mind’ and ‘Dare To Fall In Love’.
Both tracks are upbeat indie rockers and exactly the type of tunes you would expect from a revitalised Phantastic Ferniture – the group made up of good friends Julia Jacklin, Liz Hughes, Ryan Brennan and Tom Stephens.
Released via Makeout Records, ‘Change My Mind’ and ‘Dare To Fall In Love’ were recorded at Sydney’s Golden Retriever Studios. The band produced the singles themselves and enlisted Tim Carr to mix and Andrew Edgson to master.
The band have also announced a run of six shows across Australia and New Zealand. The Dare To Fern In Love Tour begins with three gigs in New Zealand at Double Whammy in Tāmaki Makaurau/Auckland on Thursday 11 December, Meow in Te Whanganui-a-Tara/Wellington on Friday 12 December and Loons in Ōhinehou/Lyttelton on Saturday 13 December.
Phantastic Ferniture return to Australia for three final concerts at Croxton Bandroom in Naarm/Melbourne on Thursday 18 December, The Metro Theatre in Gadigal/Sydney on Friday 19 December and Community Hall in Colomatta/Blackheath on Saturday 20 December.
Tickets go on sale at 9am AEST on Monday 15 September via phanfern.com.
Coming together in 2014 in the basement of Frankie’s Pizza in Sydney after Julia Jacklin’s birthday, Phantastic Ferniture was an outlet for the singer-songwriter and her pals’ garage rock endeavours.
The band released their self-titled debut album four years later in 2018. They then embarked on a near sold-out national tour in support of the record, which received critical acclaim and spawned the singles ‘Fuckin 'n' Rollin’, ‘Gap Year’, ‘Bad Timing’ and ‘Dark Corner Dance Floor’.
Phantastic Ferniture went on hiatus in 2018 as Jacklin’s solo career exploded before a surprise reunion show in 2020. Things went quiet again for several years until the band returned and embarked on an Australian tour in January and Febraury of this year.
Phantastic Ferniture are yet to confirm if they have a new album on the way, but with the band dropping two new songs, hopes are high that their long-awaited sophomore record is in the works.
‘Change My Mind’ and ‘Dare To Fall In Love’ by Phantastic Ferniture are out now. For ticketing information, visit phanfern.com.
