If you’re not already familiar with LA-based Australian singer-songwriter Jack Gray, there’s still time to jump on the bandwagon before his star skyrockets.
The emerging singer, songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist has got people talking overseas as he prepares for the release of his debut album Swimming In Jeans, out Friday 11 September via Island Records Australia.
Produced and performed almost entirely by Gray, Swimming In Jeans was predominantly recorded over the past 12 months, with many of the songs written across the past three years.
Less produced than his earlier work, Gray says, “with this record I just wanted to put the blinders on and trust my gut.”
Consisting of 12 tracks exploring life as a young man in his early twenties, the record includes the previously released singles ‘Look At You’, ‘Tattoos’ (co-written with Peach PRC), ‘Drive Her Home’, ‘Bluffin’, ‘Dumb Sh*t’ and the just-released title track ‘Swimming In Jeans’.
Labelled as Gray’s most reflective single yet, the track features pedal steel and Gray’s warm harmonies, with the song’s lyrics open to interpretation. Press material cites ‘Swimming In Jeans’ as the centrepiece of the record and the “perfect metaphor for the last few years” of Gray’s life as a working musician navigating his twenties.
