Blood Lotus is the new musical project of Naarm/Melbourne-based creative Hannah Wu. Merging ambient club music with avant-garde R&B and traditional Chinese instrumentation, there’s an intriguing aspect to her music, which continues with her latest single, ‘Nightfall’.
A collaboration with Sydney-based project Heart Armour, the track is a moody, intimate sonic wonder similar to Kaleida and Zola Jesus. ‘Nightfall’ was written during a single studio session and uncovers the quiet tension that exists between friendship and romance.
The track is accompanied by a music video shot in Taiwan and directed by David Tse. Adding to the atmosphere of the song, Tse had this to say about the making of the video, “We went to Taiwan and filmed four music videos in a week, all very much inspired and influenced by different subsets of Asian new wave cinema, particularly Taiwanese and Hong Kong New Wave. It was actually my very first time in Asia! I found the experience incredibly special and moving.”

‘Nightfall’ is taken from Blood Lotus’ debut album Middle of the Night, out independently on Friday 4 August. The album is inspired by Wu’s personal truth with help from producers Kuya Neil and Voidhood.
Speaking to the heart of Middle of the Night's collaborative environment, Kuya Neil shares, “The production and recording process with Blood Lotus was something new and exciting for us. Sharing production duties with Voidhood, we were able to focus on all our strengths in the sessions and keep the momentum, taking turns adding elements and building off each other's ideas in real time”.
The album was named after the time and process of writing the album, between the hours of dusk and dawn. Across 10 powerful tracks, Middle of the Night explores the heartbreak that comes with a relationship ending, letting go and moving on, and is shaping as one of the second half of the year’s most anticipated releases.
