American noise rock group Unwound is making the trip Down Under this September. The Washington quartet has announced they are playing four dates in Sydney, Adelaide, Melbourne and Brisbane.
The Australian tour kicks off in Sydney at Oxford Arts Factory on Thursday, September 19 and then heads to Adelaide with a gig at Lion Arts Factory on Friday, September 20. The final two shows are in Melbourne at the Corner Hotel on Saturday, September 21 and in Brisbane at Soapbox on Sunday, September 22.
Support comes from alternative Sydney act A Broken Sail, who have been thrilling fans with their moody rock since 2017.
This is Unwound’s first Australian tour since forming in 1991. Mainstays of the post-hardcore and alternative scene of the 90s, Unwound were a flagship band of the independent record label Kill Rock Stars and known for their relentless touring.
After ten years, seven albums and hundreds of shows, Unwound went their separate ways in 2001. Many of the band members went on to have success with other musical endeavours before a reunion was touted in 2012 when their catalogue was reissued. Sadly this never materialised, with the band still dealing with several internal conflicts.
The devastating death of bassist Vern Rumsey in 2020 and the onset of the pandemic brought about a mindset change within the band. Unwound began sharing videos of themselves practising and soon announced they were reforming. This new lineup consists of original members Justin Trosper (vocals, guitar, saxophone) and Sara Lund (drummer) alongside newcomers Jared Warren (bass) and Scott Seckington (guitar).
Unwound played their first live gig in 21 years in 2023 at a surprise show in Astoria, Oregon. They followed this with a North American tour and a slot on the bill of the Primavera Sound Festival in Barcelona.
The response to their shows has been immense, and their Aussie gigs are not to be missed by those with a love of 90s alt-rock.
Tickets for Unwound’s Australian tour are on sale now via the band’s website.
