It’s been 14 years since all-female First Nations duo Stiff Gins released an album, but the wait for new material from Wiradjuri/Yorta Yorta woman Kaleena Briggs and Yuwaalaraay woman Nardi Simpson is finally over after the pair announced the release of their fifth studio album, Crossroads.
Arriving Friday 27 June (pre-order via Bandcamp), Crossroads marks the folk and roots duo’s 25th year together and merges tradition with innovation. Produced by Syd Green (Casey Chambers, 19Twenty), the album explores First Nations representation in Australia and features rich storytelling and singing in both English and First Nations languages.
Stiff Gins have offered a glimpse of what to expect with the release of the single, ‘Bear and Bee’, which is accompanied by an animated music video produced by Four-Legged Fish Studios (Tess Chung, Fletcher Johnson, Amy Redden, Kirra Shay and Enda Murray).
The duo have also revealed they are hitting the road for a nine-date tour that begins at St Kilda’s George Lane on Friday 18 July. Stiff Gins then perform at Meeniyan Town Hall in Meeniyan on Saturday 19 July, Odessas at Leavers in Creswick on Sunday 20 July and Blak Day Out in Meanjin on Saturday 26 July.
After a short break, the duo get back on the road with shows at Wauchope Arts Hall in Wauchope on Saturday 16 August, Stone Pony in Aldinga on Friday 22 August, Trinity Sessions in Tarntanya/Adelaide on Sunday 24 August and Smiths Alternative in Ngambri/Canberra, on Friday 12 September, before wrapping things up at Windsong Pavilion in Barragga Bay on Sunday 14 September.
