Award-winning guitarist and local music legend Julian Barnett has sadly passed away.
A true champion of the local South Australian music scene, Julian had been a vital contributor with over 45 years of experience as a songwriter, producer, teacher and performer.
Born on September 18, 1960, Julian was involved with music at a young age, with one of his first bands being Sombre No Longer. A wizard on the guitar, he incorporated a wide range of genres into his sounds, playing everything from classic rock and jazz to folk and experimental rock.
Julian featured as a key member in several well-known Adelaide bands, including Billy and the Redfins, the Julian Barnett Ensemble, JustAboutEverything, Steve Foster & the OCQ, and Sympathy Orchestra.
Along with performing on stage with his friends, Julian was responsible for countless dance and theatre productions over the years.
Not only was Julian an accomplished musician, but also a highly respected sound engineer and producer, collaborating with acclaimed director Rolf De Heer on the soundtrack for his award-winning film The Tracker.
Away from the studio and the stage, Julian was a teacher at Adelaide Uni, where he helped impart his knowledge to a new generation of students.
A beloved father and grandfather and a wonderful friend to many, Julian will be greatly missed by the Adelaide music community.
Good friend and Wheatsheaf music co-ordinator Ria Loof had this to say about Julian:
“His musical abilities showcased remarkable talent and genius, complemented by a kind heart and a spirit that inspired connection, creativity and an eccentric sense of humour. Loved and adored by many.”
Julian’s wake will be held at the Wheatsheaf Hotel on Wednesday 25 February from 6pm, and anyone whose life he may have touched is welcome to attend and celebrate his life with friends and family.
Vale, Juilan Barnett.
