Last month Rewind Sound and Studios (formerly known as Animal House) announced it was moving out of its Welland warehouse after 16 years.

What was once a valued volunteer-run arts, music and community space has been forced to close due to exorbitant rent increases and other added expenses, meaning the crew can no longer afford to operate in the current space.

While devastating news for the community, Rewind is making sure they go out with a bang, announcing the Rewind Bump Out BBQ Bash this weekend.

Taking place on Saturday 11 July from 5pm-11pm, the event will feature a selection of local DJs spinning all the best tunes, a raffle, BBQ, karaoke and much more.

Posting on Instagram about the event, organisers said the farewell bash is a chance for punters to “share memories of this building, and celebrate/commiserate with your community.”

Entry is pay-what-you-can, with all proceeds going towards the move-out and future-space efforts, with Rewind already on the hunt for a permanent community-owned space.

Capacity is limited, so make sure to get your ticket asap via humanitix.com. Free for First Nations folks.

The warehouse Rewind has occupied for over a decade and a half has hosted countless artist residents, gigs, band rehearsals, events, workshops, markets and creative projects.

A beloved space for the western suburbs community, long-time Rewind member Gilbert Garden has this to say about the unfortunate events surrounding the space’s forced move, “The closure of this creative, grassroots space will be a huge loss to a diverse community that consists of local creatives, musicians, young people, queer and trans people, those on low incomes, grassroots groups and many others.”

Rewind member Maddie Diamond adds, “In a cost of living crisis where third spaces are becoming few and far between, we’re devastated to have been forced into this position. Rewind’s closure isn’t an isolated situation – it’s part of a long string of venues and spaces being lost to rising costs and corporate interests.”

Lilly May Thomas, studio resident, said, “I’ll miss so many things about the warehouse. Them’s Shed weekly hangouts, community cook-ups, making art, poetry nights, meeting new people. There’s a great friendly and communal vibe at Rewind. I’m not sure where else I’ll get the same sense of community.”

Rewind members aren’t letting the closure get them down and have already begun fundraising for a new space, but need the support of the wider community to help Rewind find a new home. Just head to Rewind’s website for all the details on how you can help keep this grassroots space alive.

Rewind’s Bump Out BBQ Bash takes place on Saturday 11 July at Rewind Sound and Studios. Tickets on sale now via humanitix.com.
