Canadian music journalist and famed interviewer Nardwuar the Human Serviette has been appointed to The Order of Canada.
One of the highest honours a Canadian civilian can be awarded, Nardwuar, real name John Ruskin, was one of 80 people to receive the accolade alongside country music star Terri Clark, children’s singer Raffi and many other worthy winners.
Known for his quirky dress sense, deeply researched questions and sentimental gifts that often surprise interviewees, Nardwuar has amassed a huge online following over the years. The Canadian has chatted with a wide variety of artists and entertainers, including the likes of Snoop Dogg, Cardi B, Tyler, the Creator, Nico Nasty, Sabrina Carpenter and more.
Taking to Instagram to reveal the news, Nardwaur posted a video with the caption: “I am honoured to announce that I have been appointed as a member to the Order of Canada. So humbled that people thought I was worthy of this honour and nominated me. I am in awe! Like I can’t even explain myself so I can’t imagine how people would explain me to the committee!
“Thank you! Also a huge thank you to everyone for the incredible support all these years. I would like to dedicate this Order of Canada to my late Mom who taught me so much about history, local independent media, and the value of research. I know that she would be, like me, overcome with joy! Doot doola doot doo … Order of ... Canada!”
Nardwuar, who is also the lead singer and keyboardist of Vancouver garage rock band the Evaporators, began his career as a radio host at CITR while a student at the University of British Columbia.
It was during these early years that he refined his unconventional interview technique, including his classic “Doot Doola Doot Doo” catchphrase that concludes every chat.
