Adelaide alt-pop songstress My Chérie returns with new EP Life is Short & Life is Long, her most vulnerable release yet.
Featuring the previously released singles ‘Dishes in the Sink’ and ‘Life Is’, the EP is led by the powerful new track ‘Box of Pencils’. My Chérie’s striking vocals draw you in over the light instrumentation on this haunting track that explores the feelings that come with living your life on your own terms.
“This is the song I’ve been too scared to release,” says Chérie. “Sharing it feels like true healing happening in real time. It’s about the mourning that comes when you can’t give the people you love the life they want for you, for me that is the husband, kids, the picket fence, the church on Sundays. I’ve lived with that grief for years. Releasing this song is an act of courage.
“When what you feel to be true and kind and loving is advertised as being wrong, it makes it difficult to trust with complete certainty. It’s a slow muscle that’s built. It doesn’t matter how many times people point out the obvious or offer advice, how do you truly believe that your path is okay? The trust in the life you build for yourself comes from every time you’re courageous. Like this for me, releasing this song.”
My Chérie goes on to reveal that ‘Box of Pencils’ speaks to anyone who’s struggled with the expectations they’ve inherited.
“Whether it’s choosing the ‘safe’ job, leaving a relationship, or stepping into the unknown, we all grieve the futures we were conditioned to long for,” Chérie reflects. “I hope this song feels like a warm hug in people’s moments of uncertainty, and that my vulnerability brings some love into the world.”
