Almost a decade on since her last LP, celebrated Aussie artist Holly Throsby returns this year with her sixth studio album, Normal Magic (out Friday 4 September via Hobbledehoy Records), which features her new single ‘Hold Please’.
Following the previously released track ‘Gallery’, Throsby’s new gem was written in collaboration with Mess Esque’s Helen Franzmann and features Laura Jean as duet partner.
Speaking on the song, Throsby says, “This is part love song and part love-lost song. I loved creating the sonic world for this – very dreamy. When I sent Laura Jean the final mix she said it sounds like we're in a 'huge sapphic chamber'– to which I really laughed; and am thrilled to have accomplished.”
Normal Magic marks a change of pace for Throsby, with the self-produced 10-track project a more electronic-centred affair that also includes electric guitars, saxophone and banjo.
Throsby sought out a whole new group of collaborators for this album, including multi-instrumentalist Jordan Ireland (The Middle East), Helen Franzmann (Mess Esque, McKisko), Laura Jean, Oliver Mestitz (The Finks) and Jake Core (Soda Eaves).
She recorded the album at several homes, with the bulk engineered at Stranded Studios in Bellambi (Babitha, Body Type). The record was mixed in Provence, France, by Burke Reid (Courtney Barnett, The Drones, Julia Jacklin).
“This record stemmed from a conversation about what is normal and what is magic,” explains Throsby. “Art making, for example, is quite magical and quite normal at the same time, and the concept expanded as the songs were written to be a kind of a celebration of the magic of normal life – little moments of beauty and wonder which can be so sustaining. A sunbeam or a bird or a moment of synchrony.”
