Genesis Owusu is one of the country’s most intriguing artists, and whenever he drops new music, we listen. His latest release, the triumphant ‘DEATH CULT ZOMBIE’, is a booming UK rap-inspired track showcasing Owusu’s genius as a songwriter.
Released last week (October 31) to coincide with Halloween, ‘DEATH CULT ZOMBIE’ follows September’s cutting single ‘PIRATE RADIO’, and if the song’s reception at Harvest Rock was anything to go by, expect to hear this one throughout the summer.
Speaking on the track, the Ghanaian-Australian rapper and singer said, “For most people, the shaking up of what they consider to be true is too scary and inconvenient. Once you’ve picked your truth, you live by it staunchly despite whatever pesky ‘facts’ and ‘logic’ get in the way. Pride won't let you be wrong, fear won't let you be free, dogma won't let you be aware. The delusion is more comfortable. But the longer you sit in that delusion, the faster the zombification spreads through your body like a plague; like a scourge. Gotta be brave enough to break from the cult.”

First featuring on his brother Citizen Kay’s track ‘Family Ties’ way back in 2015, Genesis Owusu has blazed his own path to he top, releasing his debut album Smiling With Not Teeth in 2021 to much acclaim.
A genre-defining piece of art that earned acclaim from The Guardian, Rolling Stone, NME and Anthony Fantano’s Needle Drop, he followed up in 2023 with his sophomore album STRUGGLER. An even bigger hit than his debut, the record debuted at #4 on the ARIA Album Chart and was nominated for seven ARIA Awards, going on to win three, including Album of the Year.
On the live front, Owusu is known for his dynamic performances that often result in the kind of mosh pits you would expect at a heavy rock show. Having supported the likes of Tame Impala, Paramore, IDLES and Bloc Party, and played international festivals including Lollapalooza, Primavera Sound, Austin City Limits, Mad Cool and Boston Calling, along with Aussie fests Splendour in the Grass, Meredith Music Festival, Field Day, Groovin The Moo and Spilt Milk, Owusu’s legend continues to grow as he readies the release of his hotly anticapted third long player.
