Courtney Barnett’s long-overdue fourth studio album, Creature of Habit, finally drops this Friday 27 March, via Mom+Pop (pre-order/pre-save here).
After previewing the release with singles ‘Stay in Your Lane’, ‘Site Unseen’, ‘Mantis’ and ‘Sugar Plum’, Barnett has shared one last track ahead of Creature of Habit hitting streaming services this week.
‘One Thing At A Time’ is a groovey guitar number with an extended solo that brings the track to a droning close.
Creature of Habit, Barnett’s first solo record since 2021’s critically acclaimed Things Take Time, Take Time, is made up of 10 tracks inspired by Barnett’s move from Melbourne to Los Angeles.
Of all the singles released thus far, ‘Mantis’ is the one Barnett calls “the microcosmic centrepiece of this album.”
“It embodies the message and meaning of every track. It’s a song about searching, and it helped me find my way through Creature Of Habit,” she says.
“I was feeling particularly lost while I was working on this song. One day, I was standing in the kitchen, making a coffee, when I noticed a little green praying mantis sitting on top of the doorframe. I took it as an important sign from the universe. I texted a photo to Stella and she said it’s good luck, look it up!
“I did a quick search and found it to also represent patience, perseverance and a guide for those who needed direction. I stood and spoke to the mantis for a while, it was a strange and enlightening moment that I’ll never forget. Eventually, I got back to writing, and finally I had the chorus to this song.”

After becoming the toast of the town with her 2015 debut album, Sometimes I Sit and Think, and Sometimes I Just Sit, Barnett followed up with two more solo albums – Tell Me How You Really Feel (2018) and Things Take Time, Take Time (2021).
Creature of Habit marks the next chapter in Courtney Barnett’s career after trading Melbourne for Los Angeles.
To celebrate the release, Barnett heads to the UK for a run of sold-out shows, followed by an extensive tour of North America. Fingers crossed an Australian return is on the cards.
