Local five-piece Broken Waves have shared their first new single of 2025, the funky 'The Chase’.
The track showcases a different side to the band, with a much more dancefloor-friendly vibe coursing through ‘The Chase’. The slick bass line will get you grooving, with the song touching on the glory days of the mid-00s indie scene.
“It was heavily influenced by our growing obsession with jazz house, electronic textures, and the kind of EDM that prioritises groove over spectacle,” the band said in a statement.
Following on from last year’s ‘Do You Understand?’, a playful indie bopper, the band explained how ‘The Chase’ came to fruition during “raw conversations about toxic masculinity and the weird dynamics of online culture that inspired ‘Do You Understand?’.”
Frontman Ben Lyons-Reid embodies a character to get the story across, “stitched together from our worst instincts – someone who’s mastered the script of charm but fumbles when faced with real vulnerability. He’s not a villain, but he is a mirror. We use him to expose how easy it is to hide behind irony, detachment, and just enough emotional awareness to excuse bad behaviour.”
The band added, “Depending on how you hear it, ‘The Chase’ could be coming from someone like that—or from someone about to ghost you. That ambiguity was deliberate. It’s part self-portrait, part imagined monologue, part attempt to understand what goes on in the mind of someone who’s just not willing (or able) to show up emotionally. It’s not an answer so much as an invitation to sit with the discomfort. ‘The Chase’ isn’t just a critique—it’s a confession. And like most of what we write, it’s aimed as much at ourselves as it is at the culture we’re swimming in.”
