Anya Anastasia Shares New Single 'Takayna'

As local singer-songwriter Anya Anastasia prepares for the release of her new album Everspring, out Friday 5 November, the talented artist has shared new single, 'Takayna'.

The fifth release from Everspring, following 'Two Halves', 'Burrow', 'Mothership' and 'No Sympathy', 'Takayna' celebrates the ancient rainforest of the same name in Lutruwita (Tasmania) that is currently under threat from logging and mining.

The track came about through Anastasia's participation as part of Bob Brown Foundation's Art For Takayna Artist Residency programme 2026, and features live field recordings from above and below ground.

Described as Fiest meets Dirty Projectors, with a little disco shimmy a la The Phenomenal Handclap Band, Anastasia self-produced and recorded most of 'Takayna' in her home studio, with Lucinda Machin (Forest Range Studio, The Tullamarines) on co-producing, mixing and engineering duties, and Katie Tavini (Marika Hackman, Nadine Shah, Bloc Party) mastering the track in the UK. 

Those keen to hear 'Takayna' live can do so this weekend when Anastasia performs at ILA as part of the gallery's new exhibition, Art of Takayna.

Anastasia will be joined by the glorious voices and musicianship of Clara Grant (cello) and Jamie Lena (bass) as she performs a breathtaking set of songs live amidst stunning wrap-around footage of the forest that inspired 'Takayna'.

Speaking about her new song and conservation and activism in music, Anastasia had this to say:

"Activism should feel like pure joy. Having a positive impact on the world should have a passionate and extraordinary soundtrack. People taking direct action should be celebrated and encouraged to feel ecstatic, exultant joy in their actions, for they are at the frontier of the push toward the very best version of what our world can be. 

"I had the opportunity to visit Takayna in April 2026 for the Bob Brown Foundation’s Art for Takayna Artist Residency. I was utterly blown away by the majestic beauty and abundant life in this precious old-growth rainforest. These places really are the lungs of our planet, and you get such a strong sense of that when you’re there, simply by breathing in. While there, I recorded weird and wonderful sounds of bugs moving through soil with adapted contact microphones, and captured the sounds above ground too, to weave into this song. 

"The thing I was completely floored by, however, even more than the wild colours of alien-like fungi, the glorious sound of rain on everything, and devastatingly beautiful life-cycles visibly in action all around me, was the people who were there to defend it. Their kindness, their care, their commitment, their strength in their gentleness… I came away, eyelashes as wet as the rainforest moss, deeply moved by the people brought together by this movement. With firm resolve to shed light on what they are fighting for, but also to celebrate the people who are there taking direct action, trying to blockade the senseless destruction as we all work toward a fair, inclusive, nobody-left-behind future, where our Earth’s lungs are restored so that we may breathe a little easier. 

"Amongst all of this, we must take time to breathe in the immense joy and majesty of these last wild places, and the positive possibilities of the world we’re striving to restore, rather than always focusing on the senseless destruction we are pushing back against. I hope my song 'Takayna' offers a sense of just that."
