Maisie B.’s new EP explores the nuances of the relationships that define us through jazz-informed folk and poignant lyrics. Here’s what to expect from the record and its Wheaty launch show.

Congratulations on The Nothing But The Sun! Tell us more.

This EP is very special to me because it contains some of my most vulnerable and personal songwriting yet and has been huge in my sonic development as an artist. My goal was to tie together elements of pop, jazz, folk and even rock music in some places and I’m really proud of how it all came together. I feel like it represents me really well. 

Collaboration is a big part of your craft. How does working with other musicians inspire your creativity?

It’s always inspiring to me to get a different perspective. Working on this EP with a band of such great musicians meant my ideas were refined and often improved by someone else adding their own ideas into the mix.  

You’re launching the EP at The Wheaty on January 24 with St Jacques on support. Why did you invite them to open?  

I’m a big fan of St Jacques’ warm, lush and authentic songs. Their [songs] are such a celebration of their love for their music and for each other, which always warms my heart and will add to the triumph of launching my EP! 

 What do you hope your audience takes away from the live set? 

The audience will be able to appreciate how many amazing musicians went into the creation of my EP. Because my music contains elements of jazz, performing it live means that it won’t be the same each time, [you’ll] see the collaboration unfold right in front of them. I hope they hear my lyrics and know they aren’t alone in whatever troubles they’re facing – I want to both comfort and empower my listeners.
