The rollout for trails’ hotly anticapted debut album hendle, out Friday 1 May via Island Records Australia (pre-order here), continues with the release of two new singles, ‘be an adult (have a breakdown)’ and ‘…then i got dressed’.
The first of the two tracks, ‘be and adult (have a breakdown)’, finds trials rapping about the loss of family and friends before they reach middle age over a classic boom bap beat. trials shares, “so many of my friends and family died before they could reach a midlife crisis. ‘be an adult (have a breakdown)’ is about understanding part of being an adult is that most of the time everything is fucked and it’s how you respond to it that makes you the human, husband, dad, etc.”
trials’ second single is ‘… then I got dressed’, a live favourite exploring themes of depression and suicide. ‘In a time where we’re diluting words, I choose to use terms that make us have visceral reactions”, the MC says.
“The only thing more serious than suicide is the silence that’s often around it. As an MC who represents and speaks often on indigenous issues, there are a few flavours I’m expected to cook with – ‘I am allowed to be proud/ mad at the cloud / as long as I’m not depressed’…I acknowledge the claustrophobia and discuss the ways I clutched myself away from it.”
Both songs showcase trials’ introspective lyrics and willingness to lay his thoughts and feelings on wax for all to hear.
‘be an adult (have a breakdown)’ is accompanied by an edgy satirical music video clip directed, produced, edited and performed by trials that you can watch below.
