Multi-award-winning songwriter, producer and rapper trials (aka Daniel Hendle Rankine), has shared new single ‘whistle while i walk’ along with additional track ‘pollywaffle’.
Both are taken from his upcoming debut album, hendle, which is out Friday 1 May via Island Records Australia (pre-order here).
‘whistle while i walk’ dissects the “push–pull between self-responsibility and religious ideology”, with trails dropping melodic rhythms about his journey to sobriety over a catchy beat with sampled whistles. ‘pollywaffle’ on the other hand, showcases trials’ hard-hitting raps over a dark piano beat.
Speaking on ‘whistle while i walk’, trials shares, “It is a feel-good song inspired by feeling like shit. What might sound like a commentary on people’s choice to accept God instead of responsibility is actually that but from my own personal experience with it. In Wales, I found myself at Sunday School listening to tales of turn the other cheek with the very kids who would put fists to mine and in Australia, I constantly saw it as means to an end to say the quiet part out loud of a larger issue, usually discriminatory.
“The big resolve and reason for the beautiful music is that overcoming my own huge problems in life which has led me to almost 7 years of sobriety, a consistently hard worker and inspiration for my children is doing it by whistling away, taking ownership and speaking to the same person either way.”

A stalwart of the Australian hop hop scene for two decades, trials got his start as a member of Funkoars. He’s since gone on to form A.B. Original with Briggs, with the duo winning two ARIA Awards for their 2017 debut album Reclaim Australia, and has spent the past couple of months touring Australia with Hilltop Hoods.
trials has also been shining a light on Full Stop Australia, one of the country’s leading sexual, domestic and family violence response and recovery services, with the profits of his merchandise t-shirt sales donated to the organisation at every show.
“Sharing a deeper part of myself to any audience, on or off stage sometimes makes me feel like I’m jumping out of a moving a car, but every single unknown and all the firsts I’ve put behind me in the past few weeks… and messages that I’ve received and the reactions I’ve been given every time remind me that if it means something to me, then it’s more than enough,” trials shares chronicling his tour adventures here.
Along with the release of his highly anticipated solo album, trials has a memoir and interactive art exhibition on the horizon, with all three projects telling his story through different mediums.
“Amongst a complicated childhood, I found out later in life the person I was the most estranged from was myself,” trials shares. “Writing these songs, painting the portraits and putting the words to paper helped me understand myself as a person, who I was, who I am and who I want to be.”
