Following the release of singles ‘INSTINCT’ and ‘GODSPEED’, These New South Whales have shared the new single, ‘MISS HER’.
Taken from the quartet’s upcoming fourth album GODSPEED, released independently via ADA on Friday 28 November (pre-order here), ‘MISS HER’ is a rowdy barnstormer that pays tribute to the band’s garage roots.
The track finds These New South Whales contemplating mortality, with lines such as “I don’t ever wanna spend another day without ya / cos I can’t stop thinking about ya,” driving home the theme of loss and love.
“Over the couple of years we were writing and recording, a few close friends lost people very dear to them,” muses frontman Jamie Timony. “I was thinking of them while recording the vocals. I think about death quite a lot. Definitely got a bit of death anxiety. It scares me – the thought that it can all just change so drastically at any time. Your whole life can be rocked in a single moment. Flipped upside down forever. I sometimes find it sad and kinda scary that the party must come to an end, and that at some stage we have to experience the suffering of losing the ones we love. But this is life, I suppose!”
Produced by punk icon Ben Greenberg (Depeche Mode, Drab Majesty, Show Me The Body), ‘MISS YOU’ highlights the band’s evolution. “It’s definitely one of the more rock ’n’ roll songs on the album,” Timony continues. “It’s been fun leaning into different styles and genres on this album and just following our noses.”
Much like previous releases from These New South Whales, the album tackles political and social issues, with Timony having this to say about the record: “GODSPEED is about coming home to yourself, living on your own terms, reclaiming and celebrating your autonomy, and trusting your own intuition.
“It’s about freedom, self-reliance, and rejecting groupthink and false authority. Now more than ever, it’s vital to separate truth from lies, to stand up to power no matter its size – and to do it with love in our hearts, not hate, which isn’t always easy! Godspeed!”
