10 years on since their last album, 2016’s Thick As Thieves, Melbourne indie rockers The Temper Trap return in 2026 with their long-awaited fourth record, Sungazer, out Friday 10 July via Mushroom Music/Virgin Music Group.
After deciding to take some time out in 2018, the band went on their own creative journeys. Lead singer Dougy Mandagi moved to Berlin before relocating to his home country of Indonesia, drummer Toby Dundas set up a recording studio and began scoring for films, bassist Jonathon Aherne released a solo project from his home base in America and guitarist Joseph Greer threw his energy into teaching.
After four years away from writing and touring, the quartet got back together and entered the studio, resulting in the band’s upcoming Sungazer album.
“With time apart and much personal growth from us all, Sungazer feels like it’s captured the most pure collection of music we’ve ever made,” The Temper Trap says. “We had more fun making this record and in the writing room than on any of the previous records we’ve done. We’re in a great place creatively and in our friendships, we’re closer than ever. Being back into the studio together really felt like coming home.”
The Temper Trap have also shared the album’s title track, a trip-hop ballad written by Mandagi for his son.
“‘Sungazer’ is a song I wrote as a declaration to my little boy Ziggy before he was born. The lyrics are a promise to him, to be with him throughout his life,” says Mandagi.

Forming in 2005, it didn’t take long for The Temper Trap to capture Aussie music fans’ imagination, performing at Laneway and signing to Michael Gudinski's Liberation Music just a year later.
The band have gone on to release three albums, with The Temper Trap and Thick As Thieves both debuting at #1 on the ARIA Album Charts, amassed over 2 billion streams worldwide and played some of the biggest festival stages globally, including Glastonbury, Lollapalooza, Primavera, Big Day Out and Laneway Festival.
Announced as support for Muse’s North American tour this July and August, The Temper Trap are also playing several festivals before returning to Australia, with a national tour hopefully on the cards.
