Local legends The Superjesus’ sophomore album Jet Age turns 25 this year, so the quartet are hitting the road to celebrate, performing the album in its entirety.

Arriving two years after The Superjesus acclaimed 1998 debut album Sumo, Jet Age peaked at #5 on the ARIA Album Chart and spawned four singles, including ‘Gravity’, which came in at #17 on triple j’s Hottest 100. But it wasn’t an easy road to the creation of the record.

The Superjesus found themselves the toast of the Aussie music scene after the release of Sumo, but the pressure to live up to the hype, along with the constant touring both here and overseas, resulted in founding guitarist Chris Tennent leaving the band and Tim Henwood taking his place.

“We felt so much pressure going in to make Jet Age because of the success of Sumo and the departure of our founding member, guitarist Chris Tennent,” reveals frontwoman Sarah McLeod. “We needed to prove to ourselves that we could stand on our own two feet without him. As he was my writing partner, I was terrified the magic pathway to creativity would be broken, but it was not broken at all; it was actually strengthened by fresh collaborations with new guitarist Tim Henwood.”

Teaming with producer Ed Buller (Suede, The Psychedelic Furs), The Superjesus began writing the album on the road while touring Los Angeles before returning home and recording the songs at Sydney’s Festival Studios.

“‘Gravity’, to me at least, stood for everything we felt at the time, the hardships, the cold floors, the hope, the disappointment, but most of all, the accomplishment and joy we all felt when we finished recording the Jet Age album,” says bassist Stuart Rudd.

Now comprising McLeod, Rudd, guitarist Cam Blockland and drummer Ben Todd, The Superjesus have announced nine dates where they will perform the album in full, along with a set of greatest hits, with support from Sydney’s The Art and New Zealand’s The After.

“We have played many tours with The Art as they are good friends of TSJ and recently did a tour of New Zealand with The After and loved them, so decided to bring them to Australia to play with us on this tour,” says McLeod. “Both bands are a must-see!”

Hitting the road in June, The Superjesus begin their tour with a gig at Brisbane’s The Triffid on Friday 5 June. Dates follow at Gold Coast’s Coolangatta Hotel on Saturday 6 June, St Kilda’s The Prince Bandroom on Friday 12 June, Castlemaine’s Theatre Royal on Saturday 13 June, Margaret River’s The River on Thursday 18 June, Fremantle’s Freo Social on Friday 19 June, Adelaide’s The Gov on Saturday 20 June and the Central Coast’s The Entrance Leagues Club on Friday 26 June, with the tour coming to an end at Marrickville’s The Factory Theatre on Saturday 27 June.

The Superjesus are South Aussie legends. Rising to fame in the late ‘90s, the band took home two ARIA gongs in 1997 for their debut EP, Eight Step Rail.

A year later, they released their first studio album, Sumo, which peaked at #2 on the ARIA Album Chart and won The Superjesus their third ARIA Award for Best Rock Album.

Jet Age followed in 2000 and Rock Music in 2003 before the band called it a day in 2004. McLeod went on to have a successful solo career before reforming The Superjesus in 2012.

Last year saw The Superjesus release their long-overdue self-titled fourth album and tour the country in support of the record. Excited to dive back into their sophomore album, the band’s upcoming tour is both a nostalgia trip and a taste of where The Superjesus are heading in the coming years.
