The Flaming Lips have announced the release of their seventeenth studio album, The Teardrop Throbs, their first to be released via Jack White's Third Man Records.

Dropping on Friday 27 January, the LP is the band's first in more than six years and the first since the departure of long-time keyboardist, guitarist and drummer Steven Drozd.

The Teardrop Throbs was produced by The Flaming Lips, Taylor Johnson, Dave Fridmann and Scott Booker, with additional production by Jon Fridmann and Mike Fridmann.

Vocalist and guitarist Wayne Coyne has released a must-read essay that details the inspiration behind the album, acknowledging that The Teardrop Throbs is a much darker affair than previous releases, exploring themes including fatherhood, death and grief, and also discussing the album's 13 tracks, including the first single 'God Will Control The Werewolves'.

The track is inspired by his two little boys playing hide-and-seek as it's getting dark outside and asking if the "werewolves would get them".

"I told him God would control the werewolves for a little bit while we played hide-and-seek..." says Coyne. "The way I heard the song sounding (in my head) was kind of Pink Floyd Dark Side Of The Moon, but Syd Barrett is still in the band."

The Teardrop Throbs will be available digitally, on CD and on vinyl in black and 'Teardrop Blue', with The Flaming Lips playing a series of intimate concerts to introduce fans to the album across North America and the UK.

The Flaming Lips hit Nashville, New York, Los Angeles and Chicago before heading to the UK for two special shows in London, with more dates to be announced soon.

After more than four decades in the game, which includes three Grammy Awards, a Tony Award nomination and RIAA Gold certification for 2002's landmark Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots, The Flaming Lips continue to release engaging music, with next year's The Teardrop Throbs already shaping up as one of 2027's most anticipated releases.

'God Will Control The Werewolves' is out now. Listen here. The Teardrop Throbs arrives Friday 27 January via Third Man Records. Pre-order/save here.
