Less than two weeks out from the release of Radium Dolls sohopmore album Wound Up, which arrives Friday 30 January (pre-order here), the Brisbane/Meanjin rockers have shared new single ‘Daddy’.
The track finds frontman Will Perkins letting loose his frustrations on the hateful displays of racism and entitlement he witnessed while passing by an anti-immigration protest.
“I was driving back into Brisbane and saw people on jet skis parading around Australia flags in the river and being menacing to other people on the water,” explains Perkins. “It turned out they were protesting some racist dumb shit and I was pissed off, so this song goes out to those clowns and the rich white guy who organised it.”
The accompanying music video features the pernicious protagonist of the song Ray, who is played by Perkins, mindlessly antagonising everyone he encounters.
“The ideas for the Daddy video came flooding in. We all know a ‘Ray’ – we’ve seen them in the streets, on their jet skis, on the news, sitting in parliament. We wanted to parody Ray, putting him in situations where he ‘obliviously’ leaves a trail of destruction on his walk through the suburbs his daddy owns. The boys in the band each got a character that comes into contact with Ray on his journey,” explains Sophie Taylor of Hot Mess Creative, who directed the video along with Gabrielle Miller. “The couch from the Daddy scenes became a centre point of the narrative, reigned over and claimed by Daddy and Ray with no space for others, that eventually is won over by the characters he’d wronged. We wanted the clip to be ridiculous and punchy.”
Perkins adds, “We have Hot Mess and Goliath studios to thank for this one. The creative direction was all theirs and we had fun acting out their visions. I played the brat, so I got to eat heaps of donuts and lamingtons and whinge on camera. Thanks to them for hearing the song and making some funny visuals, no thanks to the entitled and dreary wankers who inspired it. Sovereignty never ceded, always was, always will be Aboriginal Land.”
