Private Function are gearing up for the release of their fourth long player, the hilariously titled ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. That’s right, the Naarm/Melbourne punk rockers have named their latest album after an emoji!
Arriving May 23 via Still On Top Records (pre-order here), ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ features the world’s first microscopic album cover comprising 2590 individual record covers designed by the folks at Bootleg Comics.
Private Function have also shared the 19-track album’s lead single, ‘Koala’, which is a sonic shift for the quartet. Less punk rock and more country fire sing-along, ‘Koala’ showcases the unpredictable nature of Private Function.
“It’s a song about hugging the ones you love and holding them as tight as you can for as long as life lets you,” says vocalist Chris Penney.
The accompanying music video sees the band wearing koala onesies and messing about in the streets of Naarm/Melbourne, including a stop at the Vegemite Museum, before being captured by the police while visiting the iconic Big Koala.
“We wanted to create an uncharacteristically wholesome video with elements of vintage Australian kitsch to match its sunny vibes – but still retaining that trademark PF cheekiness throughout,” say directors and band members Lauren Hester (guitar) and Aidan McDonald (drums).

¯\_(ツ)_/¯ being touted as the first microscopic album cover might sound gimmicky, but it’s on brand for Private Function. After all, this is the same band that released a limited edition ‘Gold’ pressing of their 2023 album 370HSSV 0773H, containing each of the band members’ urine.
Those keen on securing a copy of ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ can pre-order the vinyl with four different colour options available – Manchester Blue, Double Happiness, Firebombed Tobacconist Black and GOOPY, which is a mystery colour.
Pre-orders also come with a free PF magnifying glass so you can get an up-close look at the album covers making up ¯\_(ツ)_/¯.
