‘Reading Keats In Byron Bay’ is the third cut taken from Phil Jamieson’s upcoming sophomore album, 10CHARLIE, out Friday 14 August.
A joyous guitar banger that started life as a melody written by Jamieson in his car, the track was fleshed out with collaborator Ben Edgar.
“I feel good about releasing this song next,” Jamieson shares. “‘Reading Keats In Byron Bay’ carves out its own space in 10CHARLIE, particularly when compared with the first two singles. It's the perfect pre-album palate cleanser; with a resounding meaning that life is short. Grab it.”
Having already shared the singles ‘Weekends’ and ‘Blue As The Sunlight’, ‘Reading Keats In Byron Bay’ showcases another side to Jamieson and 10CHARLIE, which explores the ups and downs of life across nine tracks, which the Grinspoon frontman compares to a flight; “departing on personal journeys unknown, embracing change, different places and the inevitable turbulence that can come with it, until finally reaching your destination”.
Produced by Oscar Dawson, 10CHARLIE features Sophie Ozard on backing vocals across the album and collaborations with Davey Lane, Rob Muinos and Ben Edgar.
“I feel a mix of trepidation and heightened anxiety with the release of 10CHARLIE,” Jamieson shares of the upcoming release. “I find this true of most releases though. I don’t know of any artist who doesn’t feel that way.
“This album is much more personal than the first record. In times of intense turbulence, I’ve written what I’ve needed to hear. It’s a balm for my soul, especially songs that were written after my friend passed away (‘Blue As The Sunlight’, ‘Reading Keats’ and ‘Eager Beaver’). They ended up in the mix in the last three months or so, and whilst they’re quite happy in a sonic manner, there’s some lyrical stuff there that means a lot to me. ‘The Soft Return’ is meditative and long; it’s something I can drift into. For better or worse, it’s intimate because it’s what I needed for myself.”
