Live music is finally back at The Austral! The 150-capacity band room, once home to the pub’s famed beer garden, has been resurrected by General Admission Entertainment and the operators of The Austral. Together they aim to bring live music back to the famous Rundle Street watering hole and help revitalise the East End.
The re-opening of The Austral band room, with its red stage curtain and disco ball roof, comes at just the right time after the Crown & Anchor announced it was shutting temporarily in mid-July.
In a statement about the partnership, GAE says: “We are very proud to be involved in its resurrection as a live music venue. GAE will be hosting a couple of very special introductory nights to kick things off at the end of March, stay tuned for line-up announcements.”

In its heyday, The Austral was one of several East End establishments where you could catch live music weekly. Sadly Producers Bar and Tivoli are no more, the Cranker is closing down, and The Exeter, while still a live music venue, doesn’t host as many shows as it once did.
The Austral beer garden played an important role in nurturing up-and-coming bands and gave touring acts a great place to perform. Although the last couple of decades have involved battles with new residents, eventually resulting in live music no longer being booked at the pub, things are finally changing with progressive local and state governments understanding the importance of live music to Adelaide’s cultural scene.
