It’s been a rough week for South Aussie music fans. First, The Cat Empire announced a tour and left Adelaide off the itinerary (although they promise to make it up to us), and now psych rock cowboys King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard have done the same.
Returning to Australia in December for a run of special shows in support of their latest album, Phantom Island, the collective have bypassed little old Adelaide.
“Australia, we’re finally coming home!” the band commented on Instagram. “It’s been too long and we’re insanely jacked to be back yeeeeeeeeeeeeew!! We’ll be rockin shit old school, and if you’re more of a Mozart freak, we got that too.”
As their Insta post suggests, the tour is split into two sections, with the first four shows featuring the band performing with an orchestra, and the final three gigs balls-to-the-wall rock shows.
King Gizzard take over the Sydney Opera House for two shows with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra on Tuesday, December 2 and Wednesday, December 3, before heading up to Brisbane and playing with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra at Princess Theatre on Tuesday, December 9. The final orchestral show takes place in Melbourne at Sidney Myer Music Bowl with King Gizzard joined by Orchestra Victoria on Friday, December 12.
The final three concerts are full-blown rock epics taking place at Sydney’s Enmore Theatre on Friday, December 5, Brisbane’s Fortitude Music Hall on Sunday, December 7, and Melbourne’s Sidney Myer Music Bowl on Saturday, December 13.
Artist pre-sale kicks off today, Wednesday, May 21, at 9:30am local time, with general on-sale beginning on Friday, May 23, at 9:30am local time. All tickets are available via kinggizzardandthelizardwizard.com.

Album-wise, the last couple of years have been fairly quiet for King Gizzard. Known for their prolific output, the band have released just two records in the last two years – last year’s Flight b741 and this year’s Phantom Island.
“HERE WE GO AGAIN!!!!!! A lot of love and time and energy and patience and growth went into this one. Can’t wait to grow wings and fly with all of you,” lead singer-guitarist Stu Mackenzie wrote on Instagram when posting about Phantom Island.
While they might not be putting out albums at record pace, King Gizzard have been touring the globe non-stop and are currently charting their way across North America and Canada on one of their biggest tours yet.
