Following the release of singles ‘Drone’ and Aozora’, Karnivool have shared new track ‘Opal’, the latest taste of their upcoming fourth album, In Verses.
A six-minute prog rock epic described by frontman Ian Kenny as a journey that “takes you out to the desert by the end of it,” ‘Opal’ features a captivating riff that was first recorded during the band’s Themata session 20 years ago.
Discussing the song’s origins, guitarist Drew Goddard explains, “‘Opal’ pulls together ideas from some of my earliest days writing with the band. The riff in the middle and end was actually the first thing I recorded in the Themata era, on a computer at my parents’ house.
“Twenty years later, it found its place here. Jon dug it up, and we made it feel more current. The verse that starts with ‘You’ve been holding up…’ was a section left off Aeons from Asymmetry. The whole track came together in a way we’ve never really experienced before - these old, separate ideas suddenly just fell into place.”
Over a decade in the making, In Verses is shaped by the band’s experiences over that time. Arriving Friday 6 February via Cymatic Records/Sony Music (pre-order/pre-save here), the album was recorded in the band’s Perth studio with longtime collaborator Forrester Savell.
The album’s ten tracks “journey collective feelings of frustration, catharsis and a rediscovery of identity,” with Karnivool explaining that the album is the ideal reintroduction for longtime fans and the perfect starting point for newcomers.
