25 years into their career, Hermitude continue to surprise, with their latest album EIGHT, an anathem-filled tribute to ‘90s rave culture.
This is an album full of nostalgia that still manages to sound fresh, with the Blue Mountain duo celebrating the release by sharing the final single ‘I Want Ya’, a collaboration with Melbourne producer IsGwan.
The track began when one half of Hermitude, Elgusto, ran into IsGwan’s mother at Bunnings and found out he’s become an in-demand producer. This prompted Elgusto to reach out to IsGawn, and along with Luke Dubs, they hit the studio and crafted club banger ‘I Want Ya’.
Speaking on the album, Elgusto says, “We dove head first into a new sound, lapping up influence and infusing it with our instinct. Outside of the studio it may have been some of the hardest times of our lives but the creative space we provided ourselves was therapeutic and a joyous place to create in. We wanted to spread that joy, make music to dance to and let go, drop the guards and pressure that life brings and push out hope. That’s what Eight represents, the cycles we go through, endless, infinite, EIGHT.”
Dubs adds, “Just like each other album we’ve written together, 8 was its own unique ride - a thorough pilgrimage through life's utmost highs and lows. The music was therapeutic throughout it all and our studio became a safe creative refuge for all the hurricanes circling around us. What we experienced in the studio writing this record was pure joy. Childlike discovery was at the forefront helping us to ink some of our most engaging and ecstatic work to date. Accompanied by the silent surrounds of our blue mountains studio, the Wallabies and calls of the black cockatoos, we still somehow came out the other side with a cohesive collection of songs that felt right at home amongst sweaty bodies on the dance floor or watching the sunrise over the cliffs at home.”
